Question 1: For those of you who recently read Ayn Rand’s essay “Philosophy: Who Needs It,” how would you characterize the relationship between that essay and her essay “Philosophy and Sense of Life“? What are the essential similarities in what she’s arguing in the two essays? What is new or importantly different in “Philosophy and Sense of Life”? Explain.
Question 2: What evidence does Ayn Rand give in “Philosophy and Sense of Life” to think that there is such a thing as a “sense of life”? How convincing do you find her case for this phenomenon? Do you recognize something like a “sense of life” in yourself? If so, explain your answer using specific examples from your own life and observations.
Question 3: Name 1-2 significant points Rand makes in “Philosophy and Sense of Life” that you are not sure you understand. Explain what (if anything) you think you understand about each point and what you are uncertain of.
