Course Description
Writing is a skill, a creative activity. As such, it cannot be learned primarily by reading a textbook or listening to lectures. One learns to write by writing . . . and writing and writing and writing. This course builds on the skills acquired and lessons learned in Introduction to Writing, and students write and analyze writing throughout the course. The focus is on āapplied philosophical writingāā i.e., nonfiction writing that applies philosophical thinking to current events and cultural and political issues. Intermediate Writing is designed to be taken concurrently with the second quarter of Introduction to Writing, though it can also be taken on its own with Introduction to Writing as a prerequisite.

Graded students and auditors are invited to join the ARU Discord community, an online social
experience that facilitates connections and casual discussion among the student body. On the
ARU Discord, youāre encouraged to form discussion groups, make use of the āloungeā areas,
and engage with your classmates and instructors anytime throughout the week.
Members of the ARU Discord must adhere to the ARU Confidentiality and Code of Conduct
requirements, as well as Discordās own community guidelines. Access to the ARU Discord is
restricted to active participants in a given school year, to students on hiatus, and to alumni.
Those who withdraw from ARU before attaining alumni status will be removed from the ARU
