Read para. 77 & 78. Relate Herschel’s claims in those paragraphs to Rationalism and Empiricism. Is the position he taking here Rationalism? Empiricism? Neither?
Herschel’s method seems to be bi-directional. First, we ascend through classification and analogy to a generalization. Then, we descend back to the observations by testing the generalization. Why do we need to do both?
