Outlining Assignment
This assignment is the second assignment in the process of writing your final paper. Last week, you produced a set of research notes capturing your thinking on your subject and your audience as well as a possible formulation of your theme. Now it’s time to nail down a precise formulation of your theme (and its contrast) and decide on the basic argument you will use to support that theme.
This week, your assignment is to create outlines for your article conveying your theme. You will need to create two outlines: an “essentialized” or “skeleton” outline consisting of the 3 to 6 points expressing the basic logical structure of the article and a “writing outline” that contains every significant point you plan to include in the article, in its proper order.
To this week’s homework board, submit your two outlines for your op-ed length article: the skeleton outline and the writing outline.
Be sure to include your statement of your subject, theme and the contrasting viewpoint also. Remember that the grammatical subject of both the theme and the contrasting viewpoint should be the subject of the article.
