Assignment on Contrast

Your assignment this week is to identify the elements of contrast in a set of assigned articles.

Read the three op-eds in “Readings for Week 9 Assignment.” Identify the author’s viewpoint (i.e., the theme) and the contrasting viewpoint that the author has included to differentiate his view. Formulate the two viewpoints in separate, complete sentences. For example, for the article “Man vs. Nature” you could write:

Contrasting viewpoint: Environmentalism seeks to preserve nature for the betterment of mankind.

Author’s viewpoint: Environmentalism seeks to sacrifice man to nature

Or, for the article “The Conservatives’ War on Birth Control,” you could write:

Contrasting viewpoint: Religious conservatives oppose birth control because they believe it fosters an irresponsible, irrational attitude toward sexuality.

Author’s viewpoint: Religious conservatives oppose birth control because they are against sexual happiness.

NB. I recommend doing a reverse outline of each article. It is difficult to properly identify the theme without one. Do not hand your reverse outlines in, however.

To summarize: your assignment is to submit a pair of sentences naming the author’s viewpoint and the element of contrast for each of the three op-eds given in “Readings for Week 9 Assignment.”
