Why is the sociological concept of ‘socialisation’ arguably invalid/ lacking units in reality? (HWK, p.229)

      Hi Nicole,

First, note that Dr. Binswanger says in that passage that the reason “socialization” is invalid is NOT because it lacks units, but because it misclassifies units. The next section then goes on to give a more detailed discussion of the error of misclassifying units.

It is possible what Dr. Binswanger has in mind is that “socialization” is a package deal of learning real life skills and brainwashing. It obscures the essential difference between these two things.

      Best,
      Dan
